Description

The Magellanic Woodpecker is a native species to the woods of Chilean and Argentinian Patagonic Andes. It is 36-38 cm in length. Males of this species weigh up to 363 grams, and females up to 312 grams.

This species is mainly black, with a white and grey patch on the wing. The males are characterized by their crimson head and crest.

They feed mainly on grub and beetles. They breed digging a nest cavity of 5 to 15m in a trunk, where females lay up to four eggs.
