Description

The Monito del Monte is the only representative of the Microbiotheria order. Considered a living fossile since all other known members of this order became extinct between Oligocene and Miocene periods.

This marsupial lives in rain forests of Southern Chile between the South latitudes of 36° and 43° where the Greater Island of Chiloe, the coastal Andes and the Central Valley are located. It can usually be found under 1,100 meters above the sea level in wooded areas, especially those of Quila and Colihue.

Small-sized Monito del Monte is slightly bigger than a common mouse, measuring up to 13 cm a weighing about 400 grams. It possesses a dense coat that protects it in low temperatures. The fur is dense and soft and the superior part of grayish brown color contrasts with the white belly. The ears are smaller than those of other marsupials and are covered in hairs.

This small omivore eats primariyl insect chrysalis and larvas found in trees and in the ground, supplemented with plants such as fruit pulp and seeds.
